Gegl: gegl04: gegl: out-of-bounds read in the radiance hdr uncompressed scanline decoder

Published Oct 1, 2026

Description

A flaw was found in GEGL. The Radiance HDR loader reads past the end of a memory-mapped image when an uncompressed scanline is shorter than the width declared in the file header. Opening a crafted HDR file crashes the application that uses the loader.

Remediation

Vendor solution

Do not open untrusted Radiance HDR files (.hdr, .pic) in applications that load them through GEGL.

Red Hat statement

This vulnerability is rated as having Moderate impact by Red Hat because successful exploitation requires local user interaction to open a specially crafted graphic file and primarily results in application termination. In standard Red Hat Enterprise Linux environments, GEGL serves as a non-daemon graphics processing library invoked by client-side applications rather than exposed network services. Because the out-of-bounds read condition triggers a segmentation fault without allowing arbitrary code execution or unauthorized data modification, the blast radius is restricted to the invoking process.

Red Hat mitigation

Do not open untrusted Radiance HDR files (.hdr, .pic) in applications that load them through GEGL.
