net: tun: Fix use-after-free in tun_detach()

Published Oct 21, 2024

Description

syzbot reported use-after-free in tun_detach() [1]. This causes call trace like below:

The cause of the issue is that sock_put() from __tun_detach() drops last reference count for struct net, and then notifier_call_chain() from netdev_state_change() accesses that struct net.

This patch fixes the issue by calling sock_put() from tun_detach() after all necessary accesses for the struct net has done.

Remediation

Red Hat statement

This issue is considered to be a moderate impact flaw, as the exploitation for this will need an ADMIN (or ROOT) privilege (PR:H) in drivers/net/tun.c.

Red Hat mitigation

To mitigate this issue, prevent the `tun` kernel module from loading. This can be achieved by creating a modprobe configuration file. 1. Create or edit `/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-tun.conf` and add the following line: ``` blacklist tun ``` 2. Rebuild the initial ramdisk: ```bash dracut -f -v ``` 3. Reboot the system for the changes to take effect. Disabling the `tun` module may impact functionality that relies on virtual network interfaces, such as VPN clients or container networking solutions. A system reboot is required for the changes to take effect.
